Privacy Policy

The short version: this site has no accounts, no forms and no tracking cookies. What you type into the calculator stays in your browser and is never sent to us. The rest of this page is the full picture, in plain language.

1. About this policy

Compare My Power (comparemypower.com.au) is a free electricity comparison website operated by O'Connor Digital Marketing, based in Queensland, Australia.

This policy explains how we handle information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). By using this website you agree to the practices described here. If anything is unclear, email us at hello@comparemypower.com.au and we'll explain it properly.

2. What information we collect

Very little, by design. The site has no user accounts, no contact forms, no newsletter and no payment processing.

Your calculator entries stay on your device

The usage figures, rates and plan details you enter are saved in your own browser's local storage so they're still there next time you visit. This data never leaves your device and is never transmitted to us or anyone else. We cannot see it.

Anonymous website analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand aggregate site usage: page views, referrer, country or region, and device and browser type. It is cookieless and anonymous. Visitors are identified only by a temporary hash that is automatically discarded within 24 hours, and the data cannot be used to identify you or follow you across other websites.

Standard hosting logs

Like every website, our hosting provider (Vercel) processes technical request data, such as IP addresses, to deliver pages to your browser and protect the site from abuse.

If you email us

If you choose to email us, we'll have your email address and whatever you include in your message. We use it only to reply to you.

We do not collect sensitive information of any kind.

3. How we collect information

Only through the website itself: the analytics script and the hosting infrastructure described above. We don't buy data, we don't use hidden trackers, and we won't collect information about you without your knowledge.

4. How we use information

The aggregate analytics tell us which pages are useful and which States people want next, and that's what we use them for: keeping the site working and deciding what to improve. Specifically, we do not:

  • sell or rent any data to anyone,
  • pass your details to electricity retailers, brokers or lead-generation services,
  • build profiles of individual visitors, or
  • send marketing of any kind.

5. Cookies, local storage and analytics

This site does not use advertising or tracking cookies, which is why you won't see a cookie banner.

It does use your browser's local storage for two things: remembering your light or dark theme choice, and saving your calculator entries (as described in section 2). Both stay on your device. You can clear them at any time with the calculator's Reset button or through your browser's site-data settings.

Analytics are handled by Vercel Web Analytics as described in section 2: cookieless, anonymous and aggregated. There is no cross-site tracking.

6. Third-party services

  • Vercel hosts the site and provides the analytics. Vercel is a US-based company with a global network, so technical request data is processed overseas. See the Vercel Privacy Policy.
  • Buy Me a Coffee is linked in our footer. If you choose to support the site there, that transaction happens entirely on their platform under the Buy Me a Coffee Privacy Policy. We never see your payment details.
  • Retailer and government websites are linked from imported plans (each retailer's official site, and Energy Made Easy). Once you leave our site, their privacy policies apply.

We never share information with advertisers or data brokers. In practice, we hold almost nothing to share.

7. How information is stored and protected

We don't run servers that store personal information about visitors. Your calculator data lives in your browser, under your control. Aggregate analytics are held by Vercel and cannot identify individuals. If you've emailed us, that correspondence is kept in our email account for as long as it's needed to deal with your enquiry, then deleted in the normal course.

In the unlikely event of a data breach that is likely to result in serious harm, we would notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner in line with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

8. Accessing and correcting your information

Because your calculator data is stored only in your browser, you already have full access to it and full control over it. If you believe we hold any personal information about you (for example, from an email exchange), you can ask to access or correct it by emailing hello@comparemypower.com.au. We'll respond within 30 days and won't charge you.

9. Complaints

If you have a privacy concern, please contact us first at hello@comparemypower.com.au. We'll respond within 30 days.

If you're not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC): www.oaic.gov.au or 1300 363 992.

10. Changes to this policy

If our practices or legal obligations change, we'll update this policy and the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy. It's worth glancing at this page occasionally, though we expect it to stay boring.
