NT electricity FAQs
Why is there no plan import for the NT?
The Northern Territory isn't part of the national east coast electricity market, so its tariffs don't appear in the government dataset our import uses for other States. Residential prices in the Territory are regulated by the NT Government, and most homes are supplied by the government-owned retailer Jacana Energy. Manual entry gives you the full calculator.
Can I choose my electricity retailer in the NT?
Competition is limited. Jacana Energy supplies most Territory homes, and the handful of other licensed retailers mainly serve business customers. Residential tariffs are set each year by the NT Government, so prices don't vary much even where a choice exists. If you are offered an alternative plan, you can enter it here alongside your current rates and compare the whole bill.
What's the point of a calculator if prices are regulated?
Three things. First, check your bill: enter your rates and usage and see whether the estimated daily, monthly and yearly costs line up with what you're being charged. Second, compare any offer you're given: if a retailer does quote you an alternative plan, model it side by side with your current rates. Third, model changes: see what air conditioning, a pool or a new appliance's extra kWh actually costs per year.
Does the calculator handle time-of-use tariffs?
Not directly. The calculator models a single anytime usage rate plus an optional controlled load, which keeps every plan comparable like-for-like. If your bill shows peak and off-peak rates, you can enter a blended rate as a rough guide: divide your total usage cost for the period by the total kWh used. Treat the result as an estimate, not an exact comparison.
Where do I find my usage figures on my bill?
Look for a section like "your usage" or "average daily usage" on your bill, usually shown in kWh per day. If your bill only shows total kWh for the billing period, divide it by the number of days in the period.
